John Mitchell Davidson papers, 1851-1960 [microform].

The collection consists of a microfilm copy of the papers of John M. Davison from 1851-1960. Correspondence between Davidson and his wife, Julia, describes his business trips, enlistment, his cousin Zebulon Vance, and military campaigns in which he was involved in Tennessee, Mississippi, and Georgia, and Julia's life in Atlanta (1862-1864) including difficult economic conditions and Sherman's capture of Atlanta; there is also correspondence between Bell I. Wiley and the donor of the material. The scrapbook of clippings was compiled by Davidson; genealogical material is on the Davidson family; the biography is of Isaac Dunn, Julia's father; miscellaneous papers are Davidson's and are service related.

John Mitchell Davidson, merchant and soldier, was born 21 October 1829 in North Carolina, and died 17 January 1917, place unknown. He was a shopkeeper in Copperhill, Tennessee (1856-1861), and served (1862-1864) as a lieutenant in Company C, 39th Regiment, North Carolina Volunteers. While Davidson was in the Confederate Army, his wife Julia Dunn Davidson lived in Atlanta, where her family operated a hotel.
